Getting ready for the library to open *YAWN*. We have a workshop night tonight to make games and stuff for the GS demo next month. Should be fun.
Month: April 2005
Back to the grind
I’ve been settling in to the boss job here by hiding in the office for a few days and putting a new work schedule together. Today’s my first day back on the Ref. Desk since the weekend. So we’ll see how everything goes once we have all the staff here. So far everyone has been either keeping focused on work or staying out of sight. The excrement will really hit the fan once we start handing out the new schedules.
Jelly Legs
We had a very nice demo last night for the Fayetteville Fourth Friday and Dogwood Festival. It was well supported by the local people and a few of our neighbors came down from the Barony of Windmaster’s Hill and the Stronghold of Eagle’s Vale. We had lots of interested people watch our fighting and I have an interest list with 18 names. We hope to retain one or two as members from this. Only problem encountered was a recurrence of my stupid knee problem. The Baron and Baroness very graciously held a short court and graced a few of us with arms to go along with our recent Awards of Arms. When I was called into court and curtsyed to their Excellencies, my right knee gave out, the patella popped off and popped back on as I fell down. It didn’t hurt much, but it weakens the leg and causes it to stiffen up. The worst part is the stomach turning feeling of the joint going out of place. And boy is it embarrassing. So now I’m wearing my knee brace and hobbling around on a stiff knee. *Sigh*
Demo-s/Demoes/Demoz…dunno
The first of many Attilium SCA demos is tomorrow. We will be at the Cumberland County Library and Public Information Center. Tonight is the Biz meeting, time to whip everyone into a frenzy of demo love. I’m hoping we can get a few new members to our group and make a good showing in the community.
Wish me luck.
Boss Hat
Today I am officially wearing the Boss Hat. *shudder* We told the staff we would be re-vamping the weekend schedule. They took it pretty well. But I can see trouble brewing on the horizon. Maybe next week I’ll be wearing the “Boss Rainslicker” or the “Boss Casket”. Watch this space for events to unfold.
Fame
In honor of our upcoming SCA demo this week, Tom’s paper out us on the cover. You can see the image here. http://www.upandcomingmag.com
And now I’m famous, sorta, for 15 minutes. Everyone has something to say about the picture, I think my favorite comment is the one from Danr who said we look like the illustration on a cheesy fantasy novel and that I look like I’m waiting for a bus.
If you want to see us in person, stop by the Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center on Maiden Lane in Fayetteville on Friday, Apile 22 from 7:00-9:00 PM. We’ll be demonstrating a variety of SCA activities.

Needs!
I am thinking today about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and how that correlates to better job performance. This is more or less prompted by the fact that I’m thinking pretty obsessively about taking on the supervisory job at my library. I wonder if I explain the concept to my staff and we talk about it that I could open a dialogue about being more responsive to the needs of our co-workers.
I think that being aware of your limitations helps you control your behavior.

The Truth
I have decided that nothing bothers me more than obfuscation and lying. I guess this is mostly prompted by the fact that Pope John Paul II has asked that his personal papers be burned instead of preserved. Doing this does a great disservice to those who want to know more about the man who helped to shape the 20th century. I think that we have a responsibility to leave an accurate record of ourselves during our lives. The people coming after us should be allowed to understand us with 360 degree clarity, not just what is written about us, but also what we say about ourselves.
It is my fervent hope that at the moment of extinction, we are granted an instant of absolute clarity, I think it would be the ultimate disappointment to die without having your life’s questions answered. The world is full of mystery, and each layer of mystery we uncover reveals a deeper mystery beneath. I hope that an ultimate truth ultimately underlies the mystery.
Nice weather
It’s a pretty day outside, sunny and not too warm (in the 70’s). Last night it rained so everything is pretty fresh and clean, for a while. It’s tree porno season right now and everything is getting covered with a thin greeny-yellow layer of “tree love”. Very verdant.
Our friend Roland turned us on to Invader Zim on DVD. It’s a cartoon that aired briefly on Nickelodeon about a hyperactive alien who is sent to try and conquer Earth to keep him out of the way of his superiors. It’s very dark and funny and would appeal to those who enjoyed the great Ren and Stimpy.
