Pennsic jones-ing

The class schedule for Pennsic U came out yesterday and I had a blast going through the classes to pick the ones I’d like to take.  I also picked some things I thought tiernen would like.  Now I have a Pennsic binder with all of my important paperwork for the event.  I’m such a geek.

Pennsic U schedule

I’m DEFINITELY not going to be bored this year!

Talking about stuff

tiernen and I had a good talk last night.  I noticed our “bickering” quotient has gone up a LOT lately, like to the point where we couldn’t share a car ride without somebody sulking for at least part of it.  So we talked about it and other things.  It’s funny to still be learning new things about the person you spend the majority of your time with.

His job is still stressing him out.  They blow very hot and cold on him there and he’s very sensitive to criticism.  This makes it hard to address problems rationally, because sometimes the boss blows it off and sometimes she blows up.  It’s a crap shoot.

In my case, I’m feeling very snowed under by projects and stuff.  Every time I go into our house, I can see a thousand things I should be doing.  I feel so overwhelmed, that usually I just go and waste time amusing myself.

I think we decided to straighten up the house in hopes that in a Feng Shui way, that would help us straighten out other parts of our lives.

MTT, Funds and Impending Doom

A great time was had by all at MTT.  Yes, it was hot.  This makes me realize that both Tiernen and I NEED cool and comfy garb before Pennsic.  I’m thinking of going Celtic (sleeveless tunics, skirts and bog dresses) with a side of Middle Eastern pants and choli tops (provided I can make myself a vesty/toppy thing that I will like).  We’re also figuring out the stuff we will need in order to live for a week in our tent.  An awning is the first order of business, also tables and chair covers.

On the funds front tiernen got a raise at work (woo hoo!), so his boss must like him after all.  And he thought she didn’t notice how hard he works.

The impending doom is hanging over a temporary (and very annoying) co-worker.  The Army is officially out of funds, so they are firing temporary hires and cancelling a lot of the spending they had planned for the rest of the year.  She’s slated to be gone by the end of this week (she just doesn’t know it yet, the Big Big Boss is coming over to tell her personally today).  This is one of those them there mixed blessings.  The woman is a genuine pill and a very loony person.  She has managed to alienate most of the library staff and therefore has a difficult time being effective because she must do every part of every project herself.  She’s also crude and abrasive as well as defensive.  This all makes her VERY hard to work with.  However, she is a hard worker and it takes a big load off of my mind to have her out there covering the desk and especially working in the librarians’ weekend rotation to give me and the other librarian some weekends off.  So I’m losing a big personnel problem and gaining a personal annoyance.  The hardest part has been not tipping my hand to her today.  I’m kind of dreading the rest of the week, once she knows.  Can you say “loose cannon”?

Snake goddess

Dr. Waddel the Snake Guy was in the library today. He’s a guy who teaches at one of the local colleges and has a collection of snakes. He showed and told about the snakes for the Summer Reading kids. I love his presentation style. He dumps the snakes out of the various plexiglass boxes he has for them and allows them to squirm around on the table while he talks. VERY distracting for the little kids, no? So I volunteered to hold two of the liveliest ones for him so he could finish his talk. I immediately had a flashback to art class in college and this chick:

Minoan Snake Goddess

Yes, those are boobies.  No, I didn’t show mine, AND I was wearing blue, thank you very much.

The hardest thing about it was that I KNEW no one would get the reference. *sigh*  It’s tough being overeducated.

The snakes were, on the whole, very sweet.  This is probably because the library was pretty cold.  They were fun to play with and the kids were very brave about coming around and picking them up and petting them.  A very interesting experience for everyone.

Hippie Baby

There must be something in the water. Our friends from Hippie Camp (that’s Adventure Game Theater to the rest of the world), Ian and Lauren, are expecting a baby. I’m happy for them and for the rest of the expecting and recently babied world around me. But I’m also a little concerned that I’m already too late. We’re nowhere where we need to be financially to plan on having a little one ourselves, and that’s the only way we’re ever going to have one (with substantial financial backing [medical reasons I won’t get into]). I was hoping that the Boss Job pay and knocking out the debt with the fundage we were planning on from the sale of Tom’s mom’s house would put us in planning distance sometime next year (I’ll be 35 then) but with Phil coming back the Boss Job pay goes away and the planning gets pushed back again. I know I can’t plan on everything in my life working out the way I want it to, but I’d really hate missing out on the opportunity to have a family just because I kept putting it off waiting for the “right time”.
It’s probably just hormones or something. *sigh*

Quick update

They’ve got the AC mostly fixed. It runs and cools and everything, but it’s running full blast all the time. Not a problem for me, but it can’t be good for the system or the environment.

Pennsic planning is coming together. August seems really far away. But in terms of project work time, it’s just around the corner. Gotta get working!

We just got a buttload of new audiobooks at the library, so I’ll be borrowing some of them to keep me company while I work.

Work is work. I’m keeping busy and they tell me we have no money. This doesn’t affect the book buying for right now, but we have to be careful about using up supplies.

Brief reprieve

We’ve closed the library last night and today while the engineers go in and look at it. It got up to 96 in the stacks at around 4:30 yesterday. The union was called in and with their influence and the backing of our safety guy, we got the OK to close the building. So today we’re doing training and administrative stuff with the staff that we’ve been putting off. So that’s good. If all we get done is fixing everyone’s computer accounts, I’ll be ESTATIC!
