Newsmakers

We made the news.

The people from the Fayetteville Observer (local paper) came down to film our latest library demo (yes, we DO live in a small town).  There’s good footage of our fighters and footage of me looking pasty.  I don’t have any sound on the computer I’m using to look at this, so I don’t know what they captured me saying.  I hope I wasn’t blathering too much.

Even with the President coming here this week, we still made the news.  Go us!

And there were about 300 people at the demo, and we got a whole page of people interested in the SCA to contact, so all in all, a good event.  I am sorry I had to leave half-way through.

Demo-lition

So I’m here at work while the majority of the Canton membership is participating in a demo for another library.  In my defense.  When I set it up I was going to be free, but then they laid off our librarian and yadda, yadda…I was there to set up.  Our turn-out was pretty good, considering that a lot of our fighting types are deployed or out of town right now and no one from the larger barony was able to make it down.  I guess a holiday weekend is not the best time to plan a demo.  *sigh*

I’m so conflicted about the demo thing.  The community seems to appreciate them and we DO get some new members and good publicity.  BUT it’s such a drain on our resources to get enough people together for a good display.  It’s something I think should be discussed at the larger regional or kingdom level, maybe offer some kind of recognition for demo participation to bring people out for them.  It’s not inherently rewarding to most people and the people who do come out quickly get burned out on demos.  I wonder how the Shriners handle it:?  Or maybe driving those little cars is its own reward.
