Movie Recommendation–Hot Fuzz

We had a great time watching Hot Fuzz (this year’s cop movie by the Shaun of the Dead folks).  It is a hilariously derivative send up of the action movie genre with a killer British cast.  If you’re a fan of action thrillers or comedies, get it and watch it.  A slight caution, they do not hold back on the gore factor.  Granted it’s not NEARLY as bloody as Shaun, but be warned, there are some scenes not for the squeamish.

In complete opposition

And it has finally happened.  Tiernen has been working so many nights that we are now on completely opposite schedules.  I realized this last night when I crashed while we were playing WoW together around 8 PM.   I was so tired from staying up over the past few weeks that I was falling asleep at the computer.  So I went to bed and he stayed up all night being quiet (poor boy).  This morning when I woke up (and remember that I am NOT a moring person) he was all bright-eyed and bushy tailed and offering me toast.  Thankfully, I’m at work all day so he can sleep in and we can spend part of the evening together.  The weekends are the trickiest part as neither of us wants to interrupt the other person’s sleep, so we wind up being rather lazy the whole time.

Oh well, this too shall pass.

Music rewind

I have been going through a big music phase lately.  I’m attributing it largely to spending a lot of my commuting time mentally composing fanfiction.  I have been bitten by that particular bug and bitten hard.  So, I am pulling all of the tapes off of the shelf and listening to them until I get tired of that particular tape.  In doing so, I realize that my musical taste stalled out around 1996, shortly after I got out of college.  I like some newer songs, but other than new albums by established bands that I already liked and some soundtrack/compilation albums, I don’t have much new music.  Granted, part of this is because I am listening to tapes, as my car CD player died a year or two ago and nothing new is coming out on tape, but still it’s some kind of comment on how I’m aging, right?

In any case, I’m starting to run out of music.  I’m even considering getting an MP3 player (I already have a tape adaptor) to allow me to get music from the computer and play it in the car, but that’s all old music too.  What to do?

On being too tired to sleep

I have gotten my sleep schedule all bollocked up.  I’m drowsy in the mid morning and around 5 PM (not very effective for work) and I’m wide awake well after midnight most nights.  This is partly due to my husband being on the night shift for the most part at his job, but I’m contributing to it by not enforcing a firm sleeping time with myself.  It’s aggravating, but I have always been resentful of enforced bedtime, even though I know I’m difficult to rouse.  I’d like to be more responsible about it, but I honestly have no idea where to start.  If I’m not tired I am perfectly capable of lying in bed and fretting for hours, and that does nothing towards getting me sleep.

I’m going to try being in bed with the lights off by 10:30 next week and see if that helps.

A. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
B. Tag seven people to do the same.
C. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag “whoever wants to do it.”

1.   I have a brain that constantly plays word association, especially while I’m reading and/or talking to people.  This accounts for about 90% of my non-sequitirs in conversation, so please don’t mind me.

2.   I love the taste of distilled water.

3.  I was terrorized in my youth by Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.  It gave me a real phobia about skeletons for a long time.   I’m mostly over that now.

4.  I have a metal plate in my right ankle that I got after I broke that ankle in a tragic bowling accident.  An interesting corrolary; it was conclusively proven to me the evening of the accident that I had chosen the right guy to be with (Tiernen) as he went with me to the hospital and was a champ for the entire experience.

5.  I’m not comfortable unless I have a book to read.

6.  I know more camp songs than any sane person really should.

7.  I learned more about late 20th century history from reading Doonesbury than I ever did in school.

Ah, the avatars of fiction. Now that would be an interesting thesis paper. I was thinking about it because my friend Logan said he met someone who wrote a paper about the socio-dynamics of the Marvel Universe, for college. This is the kind of stuff I wish I had been savvy enough to get away with in high school. My four years would have been a lot more fun if I had taken the opportunity granted by those “write about anything related to…(subject)” assignments to write about the really important stuff (see subject line).

In the Real World, things are progressing fine. Tom’s working, I’m working. It’s the end of the fiscal year. We’re looking forward to cooler weather (and hopefully some rain) in September. There’s a lot of SCA stuff planned so I’ll have some busy weekends.
